Ancient method

The Craft

A method older than
the Mughal court.

The deg-bhapka method has been practiced in Kannauj for over 500 years. A copper still (deg) holds botanical material and water. A receiver vessel (bhapka) collects the steam through a bamboo pipe. The oil rises. Nothing is rushed.

Our oud comes from Assam's Aquilaria trees — only those infected by decades of natural fungal bloom, sourced from families who have worked the same forests for three generations. Wild trees over 60 years old. Resin so rare that 20 kilograms of wood yields barely 12ml of oil.

Sandalwood is aged in sealed copper vessels for years before blending. The copper imparts a mineral warmth that no other vessel can. Some lots in our cellar have rested for over two decades.

Dry-Down Notes

How each oil
unfolds on skin.

Attar is not static. It opens, evolves, and rests — over hours, not minutes. These are collector's notes, not marketing copy.

Oud Assam

Evening · Ceremonial

10–14 hours
Opens

Resinous bark, dark forest floor, faint smoke

Heart

Animalic warmth deepens — barn, amber, a hint of leather

Rests

Pure wood, incense, mineral earth that lasts until morning

"The opening is confrontational. The base is transcendent."

Ruh Gulab

Morning · Devotional

6–8 hours
Opens

Fresh Damask petals, morning dew, faint green stem

Heart

Honeyed rose, full and warm, the scent of the petal not the flower

Rests

Rose wax, soft skin musk, a whisper of honey

"Rose that smells like rose, not like something that was once near a rose."

Mitti

Monsoon · Memory

4–6 hours
Opens

Petrichor, wet clay, ozone — the first ten seconds of rain

Heart

Warm earth, green grass, the smell of a just-watered garden

Rests

Dry soil, mineral warmth, ancient clay

"The smell of your childhood courtyard after the first rain."

Shamama

All-day · Complex

8–12 hours
Opens

Saffron, cardamom, citrus zest — a bazaar at dawn

Heart

Rose, vetiver, spice in perfect conversation

Rests

Oud, sandalwood, amber, musk — the full library

"Forty botanicals that somehow agree with each other."

Collector Voices

Those who wear
and remember.

"I own over sixty niche fragrances — Amouage, Bogue, the early Lutens. The Oud Assam from Attar is the only thing I reach for before an important evening. It has a weight that no synthetic accord can replicate. The opening is almost difficult, and then it becomes something you don't want to wash off."

"I have been wearing Chandan before Fajr for over a decade. When I found Attar's copper-aged lot, I understood what I had been missing — there's a mineral warmth in it that I can only describe as the smell of a very old prayer. My grandmother recognized it immediately."

"I needed something for my father's 70th birthday that felt like an heirloom, not a purchase. The Shamama arrived in its wax-sealed box with a handwritten blending note. He opened it, held it for a long time, and said it smelled like something he had forgotten. That was the gift."

"I work with raw materials professionally. What Attar does with sourcing is extraordinary — the Ruh Gulab is from the February harvest, which is the peak, and you can tell. No Kannauj house ships this quality to retail. I had to ask twice how they were pricing it."

"I grew up with Gulf oud. Assam oud is different — more animalic, more confrontational at first. The Attar lot is genuinely wild-sourced, which you can smell immediately. The tangy opening that collectors look for — it's there. I ordered three bottles."
